Headlining the Tuborg stage the band’s crowd seemed to be lacking due to The Offspring’s headline slot on the main stage taking place at the same time. But it didn’t matter as the gathered fans were hardcore H.I.M lovers. Dressed in black knee length hoodie and jeans lead singer Ville Valo and band took to the stage in silence only to wave a bit before launching into their first track ’Passion’s Killing Floor’. The crowd applauded and cheered loudly after each song but after a few tracks in Valo joked he had been expecting bottles heading towards the stage. Valo said after a round of applause: “Very, very kind of you and still not a single pint of piss has been thrown at this stage. That is pretty good. Not since the good old days in 2005.” The band also did two covers. They performed the first, a cover of Chris Isaak track ’Wicked Game’, as the sun set behind the stage. H.I.M also covered Billy Idol’s ’Rebel Yell’ which received a huge shout of approval from the crowd. After 2005 fiasco I was really nervous about it and I thought it would be crap but it was probably the best HIM gig we've been to [I've been to 18 and Hez to 19] They totally won over the Download crowd which is noturiously hard for a band like HIM! Don't listen to what NME says about the small crowd. From where we were it didn't feel small at all. We were near the front and on Mige's side! The music was perfect! Perfect sound and Villes vocal acrabatics went down so well with the crowd! As did the whole of the rest of it. I was amazed and so was Ville when the crowd burst out into spontanious chanting of HIM HIM HIM not just once but five times during the set!!!!!!!! Villes face was a picture and he said he'd only ever seen that at a Scorpions gig and that he was blushing!! Bless him. The set list is on the NME site. He said that Join Me was probably too poppy for a festival like that but they had to try it anyway and he almost asked the audience if they could play Rebel Yell by saying they would do it if people were ok with it? Everyone was!!! He said he couldn't do the lip though [lol oh yes he can!] He did sing "I've got a cock made out of platinum" which sure was a bonus! Someone threw a Iron Maiden shirt on the stage and he thanked them for it and said that Iron Maiden were the first band he ever saw and that went down a treat too with the crowd! He also spoke about masturbating in the dark as the light started to fade and all his usual banter! Three songs in he said they usually get hit with piss bottles so this was so good! He and Mige were pointing at the moon as the sun went down. Very romantic! Its right next to East Midlands Airport and you are literally right under the planes as they take off and land so these huge planes were over head as the band was playing. It made for a great atmosphere in the dark and V and M were remarking on it. He wasn't actually running round the stage with his arms like a plane out but you could still tell they were talking about the planes from their actions! I was so hoarse from singing every word he sang. He wore all black apart from the purple beanie. The tail coat, the trouses with the line down, t.shirt had somehing white on the front, hoodie and possiby a silky scarf. Couldn't quite tell. The bandwere in such good spirits and Ville was laughing so much with Mige [!] The folks here worried about him drinking. No chance he was as sober as judge and totaly in control of the band and looked andsounded amazing. He looked in our direction quite a few times probably cos we were acting like people who had been let out of the loony bin for the day! And even bigger bonus was seeing them go onto and leave the stage and leave that night. Ville waved from the steps on his way out and all the boys got in a white transit van with seats in and left very quickly! Did anyone catch the full interview with Ville with Fern Cotton on Radio One? When Ash wemt offf they switched quickly to him being interviewed and they only played half of it before they came on stage. I was so proud of them doing so well at Download of all places!!!! It was so good and neandathal man maanged to stay away!!
