Beautiful: http://www.examiner.com/article/interview-with-him-s-ville-valo [more]As previously announced, Finnish band HIM has returned to the spotlight after a 2-year hiatus. Last month, the band announced that they would be releasing a new compilation album titled "XX- Two Decades of Love Metal". The album will include some of the band’s favorite singles as well as a new song called “Strange World”. After hearing about the band’s comeback, I decided to get in touch with lead singer Ville Valo to see what are the current and future plans for the band. What’s the deal with band now? You’re going to be releasing a new album in October… Yeah. The album will be out on the 25th in Europe. I don’t know what’s happening with it in America yet. It’s basically a way for us to say “hi” and in a way to tell people that we still exist. We’re also gonna be releasing a new album next year sometime probably in March or April. You’ve been gone for over two years. Your last album “Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice was released in 2010 and you guys didn’t tour much after that. No. Basically the main problem that we had is that our drummer had really bad problems with his hands. He had like nerve problems and stuff like that so he wasn’t able to play for about 8 months. So originally the guys said “Oh God. Maybe we should just get a really sh*tty drum machine or wait until he comes back…” so we waited until he came back and now everything’s fine. He had some like odd nerve/tendon disorder thing, which happens a lot of times with drummers. Well, I’m sure it was worth the wait for him to come back instead of having to use a drum machine! (Valo laughs) Drum machines are shit besides when it comes to Sisters of Mercy. Right! Actually, when I got to hear your last album I noticed and liked how detailed it was. I can tell that you guys put a lot of effort and time in it. I don’t usually hear that a lot with bands nowadays. The thing is, I think that when you really care about something you really have to work on the little tiny microscopic things. We’ve done this for such a long time that you have to challenge yourself and hopefully we will keep doing that bit by bit. You have been together for a long time now. I believe you have 8 albums out? I think the next one’s gonna be the eighth, if I’m not completely mistaken. This next one is gonna be our second compilation album so I think it’s the eighth proper studio album. We’ve been around for a while. We’ve been working together since me and the bass player were like super kids. I was a bass player and he was a bass player. We just got along and the rest is macabre history!, and that was in the early 90s. We’re so f*cking old! I’ve also heard that very first album you guys released. It has a vibe that not a lot of bands have at the moment so I’m looking forward to you guys releasing some new stuff. The album coming out now does have one new song in it though… Yeah. It’s a funny story actually about a guy called KE Aka Kevin Grivois. The story goes that he was too gay for the American record labels which is so f*cking funny, like what the hell!?. This song was the kind of song that you hear for the first time and you’re like “Oh Lord!” and then all of the sudden you’re 10 years away from the song. I’ve always loved the song, then we just had the idea of doing a crazy cover of it and that’s what we did. I’m really happy that KE contacted us and said that he really enjoyed it so we’re really happy about it. He’s from the 90s... He’s like mid 90s. I think it was 1996 when the song came out. It wasn’t big in the states but it was huge in central Europe. It was number one in the U.K. I believe. It was really big. I’ve actually heard it before. Then I heard your version and I think it’s different. Different in a good way that is! (Valo laughs) We’ll see what happens. We’re not trying to rape the original. We’re not trying to show any disrespect. We’re just trying to do what we do. Like I said, we’re just very happy that he contacted us and said “Hey guys! Go for it!” I like both versions a lot. I find them very different too. Well, that’s the point. You don’t want to do the same thing over again. It’s kinda like us doing a cover of a Type-O Negative song. We might one day, but they would sound very similar. You need to have a different angle. Kind of like David Lynch. Did you shoot a video for this? Or planning on doing so? You know how it is these days. Videos don’t really matter that much and there's no budgets for them so what we did is that we shot some videos at the studio where we’re recording the album at the moment. Actually, at this moment if you go to Heartagram.com there’s a live video of “Strange World” We’re old anyway so we thought why would we try to be like fat middle- age mannequins in front of a Red camera, so we thought it would be better to just play that stuff live and have that recorded. We have about 8 songs so probably they’re gonna come out a week away from each other or something like that. Are you going to be recording the new album just in Europe? For the new stuff we’re gonna be recording here in Helsinki, then we’re gonna finish mixing it in London. That’s what we know right now. We don’t know anything else that’s gonna happen. We’re just hoping that’s gonna be good stuff. After you get the album out, I’m assuming that the typical things are going to happen where you have to go on tour and stuff like that... We don’t have to go on tour. We get the opportunity to go on tour, but you have to remember that we don’t have to. Nobody has to make an album and nobody has to write a song. If you have the urge to write a song and you can’t live without writing that particular song then it’s okay. Same thing with touring. It can be devastatingly boring at times, devastatingly insane at times, and everywhere in between. I get what you mean. Maybe a band can feel tired and bored of getting on stage and playing the same songs for over 10 years. Well, it’s kind of like falling in love with somebody. You have the proper chat, you wait for the proper date, and then you wait for the first touch. That’s exactly how it feels. That’s a good way of putting it…. But I do know what you’re saying! (Valo laughs) The point is, it feels very new. Everybody in the band is in a different place and it’s very important for it to feel right. It’s very important! HIM is currently in Finland working on their upcoming album “Tears on Tape” which will be released in early 2013. Their new single “Strange World” is now available on iTunes.[/more]
