Dennoch büßt der inzwischen 36-jährige HIM-Frontmann nichts von seiner charismatischen Präsenz ein, die ihm und der Band spätestens seit ihrem Über-Hit „Join Me“ eine gigantische Fangemeinde eingebracht hat. Mit “Tears On Tape” steht nun das achte Album der finnischen Love-Metaller in den Regalen. Warum die Studioarbeit acht Monate auf Eis lag und warum Essen vor Konzerten ein absolutes No-Go für ihn ist, verriet Ville exklusiv im Interview. Von Nicole Feybert Ville, Glückwunsch zum neuen Album! Ihr wurdet in der Zwischenzeit sehr von euren Fans vermisst … Ville Vale: Danke! Ja, das letzte Album ist eine Weile her. Aber wenn du versuchst, ein gutes Album zu machen, braucht es schonmal seine Zeit. Du sprichst etwas deutsch, stimmt das? Ville: (auf deutsch und fast akzentfrei:) Ein bisschen! Nicht schlecht. Noch was? Ville: Schon, aber das meiste davon ist nicht jugendfrei (grinst). Als wir damals noch etwas mehr durch Deutschland getourt sind, war ich durchaus in der Lage, einer Konversation zu folgen - wenn es nicht gerade um Fachdiskussionen oder Ähnliches ging. Das mit dem Sprechen ist aber ziemlich kompliziert. Vorab: Gibt es irgendeine Frage, die du so richtig leid bist? Ville: (überlegt) ... eigentlich nicht. Obwohl, warte, dieses abschließende „Gibt es für dich noch irgendetwas hinzuzufügen?“. (verzieht das Gesicht) Also das ist ja wohl die blödeste Frage der Welt. Lass uns über „Tears On Tape“ sprechen. Welcher Song fängt für dich die Atmosphäre des Albums am ehesten ein? Ville: Es wäre grundsätzlich einfacher, die Zuhörer entscheiden zu lassen. Wir selbst sind dadurch, dass wir so lange daran gearbeitet haben, einfach „zu nah dran“. Wenn ich die Wahl hätte, würde ich sagen, „All Lips Go Blue“, das ist der zweite Song des Albums. Es war der erste Song, den wir fertig gestellt hatten während der Probe und der erste, der seinen Weg zu einem fertigen Song fand. Und als wir den hatten, führte uns das quasi zum Rest des Albums. Daher finde ich den Song sehr wichtig. Ich mag die Melodien, die Akustikgitarre darin, die Riffs, die HIM-artigen Akkorde, es hat alle Elemente des Albums vereint. Aber es dauerte ein paar Monate, bis wir in der Lage waren, es uns aus einer objektiveren Sicht anzuhören. Ich war beim Mixen involviert, beim Mastering, ich konzentriere mich auf eine Menge Details, kenne jeden Effekt. Für mich und die Band ist es schwer, das Album mit Ohren eines außenstehenden Fans anzuhören. “Join Me? Der beschissenste Song, den wir je gehört haben.” Wie schwierig war es, die Single(s) auszuwählen? Das ist ja ein wenig, wie das „Lieblingskind“ auszusuchen, oder? Ville: (lacht) Nein, nicht wirklich, uns war es fast egal, was nun die Single wird. Nachdem wir so eine lange Zeit am Album gearbeitet hatten, haben wir mit der Plattenfirma gesprochen, mit unseren Familien und Freunden, um herauszufinden, an welchen Song sie sich nach dem ersten Anhören am besten erinnern. So haben wir die Songs ausgesucht. Ich glaube nicht, dass es hier ein richtig oder falsch gibt. Ich habe damals zum Beispiel nie gedacht, dass „Join Me“ eine gute Single war. Wir hatten die erste Version fertig, die, die sich hier millionenfach verkaufte, aber die Plattenfirma hasste es. Sie sagten: „das ist der beschissenste Song, den wir je gehört haben.“ Kurz drauf war er Nummer 1. Und plötzlich hieß es dort: „Ja, das war unsere Idee. Da haben wir sofort dran geglaubt.“ Der ganze Kram. Es gibt da immer nette Unfälle. Und zu nah am kreativen Prozess dran zu sein, einen Song aufzubauen, macht es uns schwer, zu sagen „DAS ist der Song“! Es ist das Beste, die Leute entscheiden zu lassen. Ja, da ist die Sache mit den Ländern: Ihr habt für die USA, Großbritannien und Deutschland drei verschiedene Singles ausgekoppelt. Sind die Geschmäcker so verschieden? Ville: Nicht unbedingt der Musikgeschmack, aber wir haben in den jeweiligen Ländern eine unterschiedliche Bandgeschichte. Und in Deutschland gibt es kein Rock-Radio. Härtere Gitarrenriffs haben dort keine Chance. Ist nun mal so. In den USA, die weitaus größer sind, hat man unterschiedliche Charts, Rock-Charts usw. Dort hat man diese Genres unterteilt, die Rockszene dort ist größer. Unser größter Erfolg dort war (überlegt) „(Rip Out) The Wings Of A Butterfly“, eine Rocknummer im 80´s-Style. Wir haben dort also eine ganz andere Historie als z.B. in Großbritannien. Das bekannteste Album dort ist „Love Metal“. Das zeichnet insgesamt ein ungefähres Bild, wie wir in den einzelnen Ländern wahr genommen werden und erklärt die Unterschiede. In Deutschland tendiert unser Plattenlabel eher zu Poplastigem, weil man damit mehr Radio-Airplay bekommt. Das ist Politik, aber wir haben nichts dagegen, denn wir sind stolz auf unser Album und was dabei herausgekommen ist. Daher ist uns relativ egal, welcher Song nun gewählt wird. Und um die Sache mal andersherum zu betrachten: Es gibt heutzutage nur wenige Alben, wo man sofort drei Singles auswählen kann.[/more] [more]Eine Handverletzung mit Folgen Während bzw. vor der Arbeit am Album gab es durch Gas´ Handverletzung eine existenzielle Krise bei euch. Ist er wieder 100 Prozent okay? Ville: Ja, seiner Hand geht´s wieder richtig gut. Bei seinem Kopf bin ich mir allerdings nie so sicher (grinst). Nein, er ist wieder okay. Es hat ca. acht Monate gedauert, das war schon ziemlich lange. Wir wussten nicht, ob er zurückkommen kann. Es gibt da einige Musiker und Sportler, deren Karriere durch so eine Verletzung beendet wurde. Wenn du einen Teil deines Körpers überbelastest, kann es sein, dass er sich nie wieder erholt. Gas hat also ziemliches Glück gehabt. Und wir damit auch. Aber es hat schon wahnsinnig lange gedauert – Monat für Monat für Monat musste er zu den Ärzten rennen. Es war mühsam. Wir wollten loslegen, und alles was wir tun konnten, war: warten! Nun, es standen nur zwei Alternativen zur Wahl: ein neuer Drummer oder die Auflösung der Band. Ville: Richtig. Das wäre aber erstmal pure Spekulation gewesen, denn noch waren wir ja nicht in der Situation. Aber man denkt über diese Situation nach, oder nicht? Ville: Ja, schon. Wir sind alle in der Band Freunde, die gemeinsam groß geworden sind. Lass es mich so formulieren: Wenn mir etwas passieren würde, wenn ich auf der Straße überfahren würde, oder ich aus irgendeinem Grund nicht mehr singen könnte, würde das nicht heißen, dass der Rest der Band aufhört zu existieren. Sie würden weitermachen, mit Band oder ohne, sie machen das, was sie tun müssen. Man kann sich nicht dermaßen abhängig machen. Es würden sich verschiedene Möglichkeiten ergeben. Wir haben abgewartet und geschaut, ob es ihm besser geht. Nur um ganz sicher zu gehen. Es wäre ziemlich kompliziert gewesen, einen neuen Drummer zu suchen, mit ihm am Album zu arbeiten, um dann zu sehen, ob Gas es vielleicht doch noch schafft, später die Tour mitzuspielen. Das wäre schon etwas seltsam gewesen. “Etwas essen vorm Gig? Das kommt sofort wieder hoch.” Deine Songs handeln von Liebe, Tod, Sünde und Schmerz. Was ist die Faszination für dich daran? Ville: Ich denke, dass Kino und Musik dramatisch sein müssen, dieses “Larger Than Life”. Daft Punks neue Single „Get Lucky“, ist z.B. gut fürs Partymachen und um sich ein paar Ecstasypillen einzuwerfen (grinst) - aber ich mag Alben, die quasi dein Leben begleiten, deine Vorstellungskraft wecken, so wie gute Bücher es tun. Oder, um bei Filmen zu bleiben, wie „Vertigo“ von Hitchcock. Es ist schön, Musik zu machen, die einen begleitet und bei einem bleibt. Beim Arbeiten daran ist es wichtig, diesen Sinn für Drama zu haben. Leben, Liebe, Tod, das sind alles starke Wörter, was sind die Alternativen? Politik, Religion, das berührt mich persönlich nicht. Das ist für mich uninteressant. Du liest sehr viel. Inwieweit hat z.B. das Thema eines Buchs, das du gerade liest, Einfluss auf deine Musik? Ville: Ich könnte es nicht in Prozenten ausdrücken, aber es ist nett, ein paar gute Zeilen stehlen zu können. Alles beeinflusst mich: Gespräche mit Freunden, die Natur draußen, die Filme, die du ansiehst, man saugt es auf wie ein Schwamm. Ich mag es, wenn der Song verschiedene Messages, auch an mich selbst, gibt. Ich zweifle viel, und da gibt es bei mir diese widersprüchliche Natur in Musik und Text. Ich mag das. Das ist wie ein David Lynch Film, wo man nicht genau weiß: Ist das jetzt gut oder schlecht oder irgendwas dazwischen? Es nimmt dir die Gewissheit. Ich sehe gerade deine Marlboro Lights, du bist wieder rückfällig geworden. Wie viele sind´s denn pro Tag? Ville: Ich zähle sie nicht - aber offenbar nicht genug (grinst). Mal mehr, mal weniger. Ich weiß, ist keine gute Angewohnheit, aber es kontrolliert den Stress. Sind dir auf der Bühne schonmal die Kippen ausgegangen? Ville: Ja, das ist schon passiert. Aber das Publikum fing an, mir welche auf die Bühne zu werfen. Ich weiß nicht mehr genau, wo das war … (überlegt) Nicht in Holland, in Italien! Da bekam ich eine, ich dachte das ist eine normale Gedrehte. War aber ein Joint. Verdammt. Da singe ich, ziehe dran und merke, das ist Marihuana. War aber eh der letzte Song … (grinst) Und wie ist es vorm ersten Song? Da machte dir das Adrenalin bislang immer zu schaffen. Ehrlich: Bist du heute immer noch nervös vorm Auftritt? Ville: Ja, immer. Früher habe ich mich auch übergeben. Das Schlimmste, was du tun kannst, ist es, vorm Auftritt was Schweres zu essen. Höchstens Frühstücken geht. Ich habe heute gar nichts gegessen und werde das wohl auch bis zum Auftritt nicht tun. Eher danach. Mein Stoffwechsel spielt wegen des Adrenalins verrückt vorm Gig. Du rennst die ganze Zeit aufs Klo, und wenn du richtig was gegessen hast vorher – das kommt sofort wieder hoch. Das ist Nervosität. Eine Menge Leute die ich kenne, auch Schauspieler, bei denen ist es das Gleiche. Wir können nichts dafür, das sind die Nerven. Vielen Dank für das Interview![/more] ïåðåâîä íà àíãëèéñêèé Shawn C. If I had the choice, I would say, "All Lips Go Blue", which is the second song on the album. It was the first song we had completed during the sample and the first to find his way to a finished song.
