Для Вилле Вало и парней это веская причина, чтобы выпустить альбом лучших хитов «XX – Two Decades of Love Metal». Вместе с HIM мы отправляемся в путешествие во времени через два десятилетия. Официальным годом рождения HIM, в состав которого входили основатели Вилле Вало, Микко Mige Паанен, Микко Linde Линдстрем и Юхана Рантала, считается 1995 год. Но это неправильно, потому что свои первые шаги группа сделала еще в 1992, однако, пришлось приостановить, так как школьный друг и басист Миге ушел в армию. Вало тем временем играл в бесчисленном количестве групп, в том числе в неизвестных B.L.O.O.D. (школьная группа) и Kemoterapia (уже с Миге). Многие из этих проектов едва ли выходили за пределы репетиционной комнаты. По словам Вилле, тогда он играл в 20 различных группах – то ударником, то басистом, то вокалистом. К сожалению, с тех времен почти не осталось звуковых файлов, что, однако, не может не радовать Вало. С 1995 все становится серьезно. 19 декабря HIM впервые официально выступают вживую, что позже Вало будет описывать как «самый неприятный момент». Но направление выбрано правильно, и в 1996 выйдет дебютный EP «666 Ways To Love: Prologue». Однако, выйдет только в Финляндии и количеством всего около 1000 экземпляров. Этот EP содержал раннюю версию Wicked Game, которую также можно услышать на «XX – Two Decades of Love Metal». Кавер на песню Криса Айзека очень популярен среди поклонников, группа неоднократно записывала новые версии для последующих альбомов. Официальный дебютный альбом Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 вышел в 1997 с Wicked Game, When Love and Death Embrace и Your Sweet Six Six Six – все они есть на «XX – Two Decades of Love Metal». В целом, по словам Вало, этот альбом получился более легким по сравнению с предшественником, кроме всего прочего, из-за нехватки времени. Тем не менее, HIM весело отпраздновали свои успехи и познакомились с интересными людьми, в том числе с американским скейтбордистом Бэмом Марджерой – самым большим поклонником HIM, он открыл группе двери в США. Так что следующий альбом частично записывался за океаном. Love Metal звучит более мощно и содержит песни Buried Alive By Love и The Funeral of Hearts, пользующиеся неизменной популярностью, без которых не обошелся и «XX– Two Decades of Love Metal». Killing Loneliness и (Rip Out The) Wings of A Butterfly стали центральными моментами альбома Dark Light. Он вышел в 2005 и способствовал продолжительному туру по США. Дела HIM шли хорошо, несмотря на то, что скандинавы там далеко не суперзвезды. В этом плане с выходом Venus Doom ничего не изменилось. Он появился в 2007 и на «XX» представлен двумя песнями – Bleed Well и The Kiss of Dawn. К тому моменту Вало перегорел; всё чаще в интервью он жаловался, что музыкальный бизнес его выматывает. Кроме того, у него были серьезные проблемы с алкоголем, что привело к уходу сразу после записи Venus Doom. Когда примерно год спустя он бросил курить (это было почти 3 года спустя, - прим.пер.), поклонники и друзья были приятно удивлены. Первый (и пока последний) трезвый альбом Screamworks на сборнике представлен песнями Heartkiller и Scared To Death. Летом 2010 вместо ожидаемого обширного тура Вало неожиданно вернулся к частной жизни, и появился снова только сейчас. Новый студийный альбом Tears on Tape объявлен на 2013 и дает надежду фанатам по всему миру.

Не было ничего, чтобы взволноваться. ....и бла-бла -бла.... Reviewing ‘best of’ albums is often difficult, as there is little, if anything, that a fan of the act will not have heard before. However, for someone not very familiar with the band, it can serve as a fantastic introduction. HIM, or His Infernal Majesty, are one of those bands that many people have heard of, and perhaps even more have an opinion of. They are a very polarising band - many metal fans, generally female between the age of 14 and 21, think that they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and can do no wrong. Others, myself included, feel that they are over-hyped, and have been branded well, but that their act is merely one of style over substance. They are the sole members of the ‘Love Metal’ genre (‘Love Metal’ also happens to be the name of their 4th studio album). The band’s ‘Heartagram’ logo is still one of the most popular tattoos among young metalheads. My sole experience of HIM isn’t from records – I saw them as main support to Metallica at Wembley Stadium, where following Mastodon and Machine Head, they sunk like a lead balloon, not helped by the fact that Ville Valo didn’t seem to want to be there anyway. So putting on the album, I was wary to say the least. And I think I was proved correct in being cautious. First impressions of the collection as a whole – boredom. There was nothing to get excited over. So I gave the album another listen, and I found myself wishing I had the two and a half hours that I had spent listening to the album back (yes, the album comes in at over 75 minutes). Taking each element on its own – the drumming is alright, guitars acceptable, keyboards are there, bass was average. Perhaps the weakest part of the whole collection is Ville Valo’s voice – he drones, there doesn’t appear to be any passion in his performance on ANY of the tracks. And as the band’s main songwriter, he needs to understand that adding some overt melody to songs is key to helping anything stand out! This album has received critical acclaim from various sources – much like I don’t understand the band’s appeal, even to teenage girls, I don’t understand critics appreciating this collection. There’s a lack of actual songs, there’s nothing to keep the interest over the course of the length of the album. Of course, I’ll get slated for saying these things – it is apparently sacrilegious to slate the Finnish band. But, considering one of the people who had the misfortune of listening to the album with me commented that “they sound like bad Spanish waiters in a bad Spanish restaurant, shut up and let me eat my food already”, I don’t think I’m alone in this thinking.

Что касается Вилленых сожалений о сделанных тату - не думаю, что он говорит искренне. Иначе бы, пожалев однажды об одной из них, Вилле не стал бы делать новые - с каждым разом всё гаже и гаже замысловатее и страньше. Уверена, что за это время появилась новая, а может быть, и не одна, на память об очередном этапе валожизни.

Интервью включает в себя, среди прочего, следующие интересные комментарии: " В принципе, мы желаем то, что я бы назвал современным ретро. heart-healer: stalker magazine о Helldone и фото Helldone Festival 2012 2012-12-30 Stadt / City Helsinki Land / Country FIN Web www.heartagram.com skreppers.com www.finalassault.org Veranstaltungsort: Location Tavastia Datum / Date 29.12.2012 Photos: Klaudia Weber The traditional and legendary New Year´s Eve concert of HIM at Tavastia, later named Helldone-Festival, has returned in 2012 after a break as 4-day event with HIM and The Skreppers as support, plus different opening acts. The first evening it was Face of God, on Dec 30 it will be Jericho Fuzz and on 31st Sleep Of Monsters who enter the stage first. Another tradition was continued, the tickets were sold out in no time, and many fans had travelled far to this event, from the USA or Japan or even New Zealand... Although I arrived shortly before the first band was due, there was no rush, no queues anywhere, an ample choice of seats, only a few people in the club, and most of them had gathered at the stage to secure the best spots in the front rows. Final Assault The band name says it all... the Finns see themselves as 80s Thrash Metal act, I´d rather put them into the category Hardcore-Punk with Metal influences. The guys released a rough sound attack with the material of their debut Dead By Dawn (“Something Outside”), later they played some more relaxed grooves, taking bows to Metallica or Deep Purple. The club filled up during the show, and in the back you could see (male) fans who approvingly head-banged along, the feedback from the (mainly female) front rows seemed to be a different one. “Only 2 more songs, then we´re out”, was a comforting message from the hyper-active front man Jänö – with “You shall die of your own evil creation” the band ended the show even a few minutes before schedule. Well, I don´t think it was that bad, the guys definitely don´t need to feel like the title of their latest 7inch Vinyl album, “Kings of Shame” ... The neighbour club Semifinal – basically the cellar of Tavastia – was ruled by DJ Jyrki , The 69 Eyes front man. According to experience from previous years, I went there quickly before Semifinal fills up, just to reach the stage and take a few photos. Jyrki focused on classics, like Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin and later rocked the dance crowd with Finnish Metal classics (e.g. Amorphis, Sentenced). The Skreppers appealed much more to the crowd, and sure – who can resist this Party-Rockabilly garnished with bizarre lyrics, performed by even more bizarre band members... Another reason might be that Tavastia was pretty full already and many people knew this band and even their new album “Sherwood Gays” and songs like Gay City Roller. Frontmann Special K., this time in a rather harmless outfit, impressed with his moves (you gotta learn something here, PSY) and later the legendary latex overall was revealed. K. alias Hiili Hiilesmaa also told us why he has a special relationship with Tavastia club – his parents had met each other here. The show was rounded up with “My girlfriend is a prostitute” and an extensive instrumental part, to which a lady began to undress herself. Well, it mirrors the humour of this band that underneath her corselet she revealed another corselet... and before there was too much naked skin, this part of the show ended, too. HIM Finnish media had reported about the stumbling start of Helldone festival, where Ville not only messed up vocally but also in terms of social interaction, therefore I was anxious what´s going to be the deal this night. No, this time Ville appeared fit and friendly, clean shaven and dressed in a style we all know. And so thin he could hide behind the microphone stick. A new song, “Strange Worlds” (you can watch the video at heartagram.com) opened the show – and I could not hear anything of Ville then, I rather heard the fan crowd singing along. And didn´t see anything unusual by then. Also when the microphone screeched during Sweet 666 … The band had fun on stage, obviously, and Ville didn´t make too much contact with the crowd (which I also didn´t find so unusual). The show seemed fine in every aspect. Then they played another new song, I will be the end of you, where Ville had problems to find the vocal line and the voice sounded weak (especially in higher registers) or could not be heard at all. Then I understood the reasons of the microphone problem – it was cranked up to the max. Gone with the sin however– where Ville snatched a guitar and the lights were dimmed down to create a campfire feeling - became one of the show highlights due to the atmosphere. Yet the following Wicked Game should become a turning point – when he managed to reach some higher note, it sounded very thin, or there was no sound at all. It seemed he hardly dared to get a high tone out – and the legendary “nobodyyyyyy.... ” turned into a half-spoken / half-whispered reference. Unfortunately, a HIM show stands and falls with Ville´s performance – even when Mige, Linde, Gas and Burton play their asses off – which they did. The problems continued during Sanctuary, and Funeral of Hearts or Join Me was sung partly by the audience for a good reason; also Mige and Linde took over more of the vocal tasks. Old hits like Open your Arms sounded better as originally settled in the lower registers, which was also the case for When Love And Death Embrace. Unexpectedly the band came back for an encore, a mainly instrumental Sleepwalking Past Hope which once again underlined the achievement of the band. For me it was painful to listen how an artist struggles to deliver a performance everybody expects – and it simply doesn´t work. I am familiar with cracking and disappearing voice myself – it happens every time I catch the flue. Therefore I suspect a similar cause here... When leaving the club I overheard a fan stating that Ville was even more drunk this night than the night before. Seems totally unfair, in my experience drunk people lose control not only over the high registers of their voices... Unfortunately there´s no official band statement when writing this report, therefore I don´t know if my suspicion of “the flu” is correct – best wishes for tonight´s show and the Helldone-gig on New Year´s Eve! heart-healer: Scene Point Blank. от 18/12/2012 года о HIM XX: Two Decades of Love Metal: XX: Two Decades of Love Metal The End, 2012 Whatever you may think about HIM – joke band, has-beens, rip-off merchants and so on and so on – it’s hard to deny the very essence of their hard rocking joy. XX: Two Decades of Love Metal compiles nearly twenty (twenty!) years of the Fin’s self-branded love metal and it’s clear that their passion and whole-hearted belief in their woe-filled selves never diminished. Starting life as His Infernal Majesty, HIM soon abandoned such obviously dark tones for a direction that leant a little more towards the doomed love songs of yore whilst upholding the inherent rock and roll nature of their chosen genre – check Type O Negative, Danzig et al for musical comparison – and the hype machine really started to rumble circa 2003 and the release of the bands somewhat seminal Love Metal record. Cue vocalist Ville Valo living a terribly rock star-like lifestyle that was well documented in the press and HIM’s career seemed on the verge of collapse with the almost forgettable odes heard on Dark Light and Venus Doom – although the tracks chosen from these two works that appear on XX are certainly extraordinary highlights. Thankfully, HIM took all of their internal issues and external critique in their stride and it was recently announced that the provisionally titled Tears on Tape was in production. Huzzah! It’s here on XX: Two Decades of Love Metal that the song-writing skill of Valo and his silky, breathy voice comes to the fore. HIM have to hand a massive back catalogue to choose from and their picks for this compilation are pretty much what any discerning fan would want to hear on the, generally, much maligned best of record. One new track is thrown to the wind in the form of “Strange World,” a cover of a song by the artist Ké, and it’s one that sits perfectly at ease with the nineteen lamentations that follow. The stadium bombast of “Wings of a Butterfly” compliments the steady crunch of “Kiss of Dawn” whilst the gentler beats of “Gone with the Sin” curl around the heart with the promise of despair. The absolutely massive “Buried Alive By Love” – the song that really got HIM noticed – hits early but by no means does that mean that XX lulls afterwards. Each of the subsequent movements of utter hopelessness at the very prospect of love and it’s ultimate demise punch with an immediacy most bands would kill for. HIM though, manage it juuuuuuuuuuuuust fine with a natural prowess for darkly anthemic hymns to loss. The bands most well known cover, “Wicked Game” (originally by Chris Isaacs) tingles with a heady anticipation and steers XX towards the closing pain of “Heartache Every Moment” via a devastating “Killing Loneliness” and a sweetly poignant “When Love and Death Embrace.” HIM have never really gone away, and long may they reign as masters of the despondence of love metal. 8.0 / 10 by Cheryl Prime on Tuesday 18th December 2012

Hän oli skarppi, rento ja fokusoitunut, kaikkia niitä asioita, jotka jäivät perjantain keikasta puuttumaan. Hän oli karsinut ylenmääräisiä välispiikkejä ja tuntui halukkaalta korostamaan rakkauttaan bändikollegoitaan kohtaan. Mikään skarppaus esiintymisessä ei kuitenkaan poistanut sitä pohjalla olevaa ongelmaa, ettei hänen laulunsa ole kunnossa. Hänen äänialansa oli niin matala, että osumatarkkuus oli kovin heikkoa, erityisesti vaativissa pitemmissä ja korkeammissa äänissä. Voi vain toivoa, että kyse on tilapäisestä äänen menetyksestä. Yleisöstä käsin kuulosti siltä kuin tätä melko keskeistä ongelmaa oltaisiin yritetty peittää sekä miksaamalla hänen lauluaan alas että kasvattamalla muun bändin, erityisesti kitaristi Linde Lindströmin ja basisti Mige Paanasen roolia kappaleiden liveversioissa. Se antoi kyllä keikalle väkevyyttä ja draivia, mutta samalla korosti sitä, kuinka paljon työtä Valon laulun eteen on tehtävä, jotta kokonaisuus saadaan tasapainoon. Niin paljon yhtyeen vetovoimasta on kuitenkin hänen varassaan. Bändi oli karsinut setistään pois kolme kappaletta – joista yksikään ei muuten ollut niitä, jotka perjantaina keskeytyivät – ja soitti encoressa pitkän ja komean Sleepwalking Past Hopen. Sen loppuun kuultu Linden soolo oli niin huikean intensiivistä ja taitavaa raskasta kitarapsykedeliaa, ettei illan todellisesta työnsankarista jäänyt minkäänlaista epäselvyyttä.

I guess leaned meand learned. I leaned on my family and friends, when I felt insecure. What I learned... I learnt to respect life, and the mysterious way it throws a little boy from Kouvola to play in front of thousands and thousands of people. I learned that one boy can play really well, and close away the insecurity, by just adjusting to a different situation. I learned that there is always a limit that a individual can take. For me it was 2 years. I learned that one can start to be afraid of something one does everyday. I learned that being famous is challenging, even I was just a guy behind the leader. I learned that it is the hardest job to be the leader. I respect all the members of the HIM crew, because the entity of HIM worked, and lived and breathed well. With HIM in 2000 The success came on 2nd album. Now they have made many albums, so it gets more difficult. I mean for example for Bon Jovi, it is hard to make new music, because it starts to sound so same. For HIM, there is the HIM sound, so there needs to be huge changes to be creative. If you reach the popularity of HIM, there will always be problems. It makes me sad to see that some of the fans who have openly cheered Ville and HIM as their savior now, when one gig doesn't go well, turn their back and start to spit on the savior. I mean it's ok to pissy, if you pay a ticket to get to Helldone, and even a air ticket to get to Finland, and the gig isn't good. But people should understand that they could enjoy the whole trip, not only the concert. HIM fans all over the world are there. And hey, tough luck guys, one gig was not so good. But come on, some of you could just shut the **** up and give a guy a chance. I challenge any of you to live a day in Ville's shoes. -What was your favorite experience with HIM and as a musician in general? In HIM... I guess playing in Tavastia for the first time. But than again, I could say the first show in Berlin. Or the main band in Provinssi... Or shaking hands with Scorpions, I mean both of them :D Or eating a nice meal in restaurant. Or reading a book in hotel room, when we all were in constant hurry. OR coming home back from a tour. Or giving a zip of whiskey to Scooter in award show... Or... Meeting all the wonderful people around the whole business. The fans. I always wanted to talk with fans. As a musician... Let's keep that one open, before I close my keyboard case. Can't asy a favorite moment of my life, before the coffin is 6 feet under. Or actually should say it before :D -Your last gig with the band was Helldone festival in 2000. Hard to believe it's been over 12 years. Do you still get together with any of the guys? It wasn't Helldone back than... Just a gig. We are not in active relationship, if I could put it that way. I mean we share an adventure of a lifetime, but we all have our own things to do. I have my life, they have theirs. We have none what so ever hard feelings, it's the opposite. But as it has been 12 years, we build up another life from there. Of course it would be nice to have a get together someday. But as the guys are releasing a new album, I guess I'll see them on TV :D -What do you think of HIM's music now and how much do you think it has changed? I'm a big fan of the first album, so I hope someday I hear that HIM again :) It is interesting to see, or hear how "Tears On Tape" will sound. After 12 years, I can be that fan again. -Last year you attended a HIM party in Slovakia. How was it? Do you get invited to such events a lot? Actually no. I used to be really careful not to live in the past. You know not to get that reputation of being a sad loser, who can't let go. I've done couple of these parties, but they have always been with a reason. Friend organizing the event.I just played Join ME for the first time in 12 years in Greece with Saddols. Few years ago I would never have done it. I was afraid to be that "loser". However to get people happy, it gives a meaning of doing it. I'm not saying that I will jump from a party to another to celebrate my time in HIM, but it was a big step for me to close the circle. Therapy for me. Part of me lived the most incredible life at the time of being in HIM. It was so unbelievaable that of course part of me died when I left. The biggest problem came with trying to deal with it. To make a reason why it was me who played there, and why did it end, why I had to stop. I think by looking back, turning the stones of hidden memories and face my biggest fears... I have finally found myself and I feel really alive. I managed let go the past, be humble in front of the future and really understand the fact that anything can happen tomorrow. To live in the presence as much as I can... It's not easy but worth of try. Maybe my reason was to experience that kind of overwhelming era, and now share it to people? Who knows?

В Финляндии альбом будет выпущен 26 апреля, а в других странах на 1-2-3 дня позже – кому как повезет… На днях мы созвонились с фронтменом HIM, Вилле Вало, и вот, что он рассказал Радио MAXIMUM о новой пластинке… «Если вы помните альбом Love Metal 2003 года, вам проще будет представить, какой будет эта пластинка. По атмосфере они очень похожи. С одной стороны там будут и жесткие гитарные рифы, музыка а-ля Black Sabbath, а с другой – очень мелодичные красивые баллады…. Вот как-то всегда так получается, что концерты в Москве и в Питере врезаются в нашу память….очень круто было! With a career spanning two decades and a legion of fiercely loyal fans on their side, they have become somewhat of a household name in the world of rock. Add this to their famous ‘heartagram’ logo and frontman Ville Valo’s friendship with American skater Bam Margera, and you have something massive. After a quiet vacation from the spotlight over the past couple of years, the Finnish five-piece are back with their latest album Tears on Tape, their eighth studio offering. Before we move onto the album itself, let’s make one thing absolutely clear: HIM are certainly not a metal band anymore. Since the release of 2007’s Venus Doom, they have taken a much softer, pop-oriented approach to their music which is clear in this release. This is something you have to bear in mind when listening to this record, because if you’re expecting metal, you will be sorely disappointed. Tears on Tape is a pop rock album through and through, featuring catchy guitar riffs, well-produced vocals and clean, synth-like keyboards. From the first few seconds of instrumental intro ‘Unleash the Red’, it is clear that HIM have taken direction from their last release Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, albeit slightly less in the style of Depeche Mode but carrying on in that vein all the same. However, the album does have the occasional heavier moment, reminiscent of the style heard in ‘Buried Alive by Love’ from the Love Metal album. This is apparent in the track ‘Hearts at War’, where guitarist Linde Lindstrom’s doom-laden opening riff shows the band’s Black Sabbath influence shining through. The album is also rife with singalong anthems such as ‘All Lips Go Blue’ and ‘Love Without Tears’, which are both perfect festival fodder. Instrumentally, melodic keyboards are prominent in the majority of the tracks and Valo’s pleasant, signature croon is present throughout, combined with his familiar raspy breaths. Heavily distorted guitar is also added into the mix; another ingredient to HIM’s trademark sound which has been ever present, no matter which direction they have taken. There are various interludes throughout the album, but unfortunately most of these seem to have been randomly chucked in, which puts a bit of a downer on the listening experience. Tears on Tape was intended to ‘go back to the roots’ of the band, a statement from Mr. Valo himself, but one that does not prove entirely true. Sure, hints of their Sisters of Mercy-influenced past are there, sprinkled amongst the accessible pop tinge, but HIM’s raw bite has long since disappeared. What you have here is an album which is in no way a bad one and will appeal to today’s rock fans, but if you like this then I suggest you delve deeper into their discography because that is where the real gems are found.

The song is the title track from HIM’s upcoming eighth studio album, and the video for ‘Tears on Tape’ follows the path of a mysterious symbol drawn by HIM vocalist Ville Valo. The reoccurring symbol is somewhat reminiscent of HIM’s iconic heartagram logo, which has been adopted by fans all over the world. Much like the heartagram, the foreign symbol featured in HIM’s ‘Tears on Tape’ video is spray painted, tattooed and tagged by various other means by those entranced by its meaning. The theme of unification is also present in the ‘Tears on Tape’ clip, as those who spread the message sing HIM’s new song simultaneously. Ville Valo recently spoke about the process of creating HIM’s ‘Tears on Tape’ album during an interview with Artist Direct. “Creating an album is very similar to the classic notion people use to describe the ’60s — ‘If you remember them, you weren’t there.’ Your heart, mind, and body are so into the process of making an album that it goes in a flash, and it’s like a blur.” HIM’s eighth studio album, ‘Tears on Tape’ arrives on April 30. The band will hit the road for a brief North American tour this May with support from Eyes Set to Kill.

The compositional structure of the songs is, in itself, a blueprint in motion, mimicking the sonic "peaks" of man's most breakable organ. Big, massive, distortion driven beginnings make way for tender interludes, which, in turn, climb or sink into huge choruses, followed by sheer metal bridges, and, en fin, dramatic endings. For the first time since "Venus Doom", most of the songs on the record have a clear, metal construction. The guitar is the master, with its varying sounds and feelings, from heavenly melodic, to infernally filthy, complimented by the drums, which have never been stronger than on "TOT". The bass lines are in fascinating harmony with the guitars, and bring their share of dirtiness to the sonic landscape. As for the keyboards, which have always been crucial to HIM, they veer toward the esthetic of the dark lullaby, played eerily in a deserted castle. There is also a very strong classical element present in the compositions. Lyrically, "Tears On Tape" is one of the most honest records HIM has ever done. Gone are the days when the meaning of the words was veiled in endless metaphors, like on "Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice". On this album, things are pretty clear. We're desperately searching for something which might not exist outside our hearts & heads, and we've already sacrificed everything for that illusion. Love is a chimera, but "love is the law", as Aleister Crowley said. Regarding the vocals, there is great improvement in that Ville Valo finally accepted the fact that he is not a screamer and that he should just do what he knows best: sing out of all of his heart, with that sensual baritone of his. Production-wise, the intent of the band, this time around, was to create a dirtier, sloppier, more metal album, with highly-concentrated, inexpugnable sound-walls and massive sounding guitars. For the first time in its career, the band included four instrumental pieces, which can act either like breaks, portals or riddles, depending on the taste of the listener, and on his imagination. The record begins with a vintage astro-synth tune inspired by Depeche Mode, Vangelis and a bit of Kraftwerk. The image evoked by "Unleash the Red" is that of an unknown God drawing strange stars, or maybe letters of the Malachim alphabet, on a very dark sky. Enter "All Lips Go Blue" which breaks the reverie with its powerful beginning. "Love Without Tears" speaks about the chimerical nature of a love devoid of pain, while "I Will be the End of You" has as a main-character that very love, spewing venom through a fast and dark, riff-ridden tune. "Tears On Tape" is the only true ballad on the record, which is rather surprising for a band like HIM. However, it is vast, touching and tender enough, with its reverse-waltz structure, to compensate for the lack of other classic Infernal Majesty writs-slashers. "Into the Night" has the sloppiest, dirtiest, punk-rock-ish beginning, only to convert into a melodic metal-slager along the way. "Hearts At War" will definitely wet your panties, because it contains some extremely sensual vocal work, and some darkly lascivious guitars. "Trapped In Autumn" is yet another instrumental piece which resembles a background song played in a satanic horror movie about the Garden of Eden after its abandonment. "No Love" contains the very seed of "Tears On Tape"'s lyrical message and can be seen as an eye-opener. "Drawn & Quartered", a progressive song which picks up where "Katherine Wheel" left, metaphor-wise, comparing love to another famous torture method, is the most interesting tune on the record. Light, enveloping, with a mathematically precise rhythm, and a very tender melody, it is definitely a HIM classic. "Lucifer's Chorale", the third interlude, is basically about Ville Valo and Co. going to hell and recording the opening of its gates. "WLSTD", one of the most metal songs ever done by HIM, is a doomy hymn, influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath and Type 0 Negative. "Kiss The Void" offers a familiar, psychedelic outro, which safely leads us out of the dark universe in which we willingly submerged for some time. "Tears On Tape" is HIM's most mature album and it has the merit of not falling into the category of "compilation records". It has an identity of its own without being a slave to the past. The word which best describes "TOT" is "beautiful", simply because rarely does one encounter such sensitive, melodically rich compositions on a rock/metal album. HIM, one of the most misunderstood bands in the contemporary world of heavy music, has found its path and it is one that eludes the understanding of many. However, there is a magic in their music that will always raise them above the "grain" - the magic of pure melody. "Tears On Tape" is HIM's darkly enlightening destination point after the troubling "journey to the end of the night" - to quote Louis Ferdinand Celine - to which they unwillingly succumbed three years ago.
