The band's provocative and (something) performance as warm-up for Metallica at Valle Hovin also didn't give off the message that the sun is shining in the HIM universe. Venus Doom underlines this fact. Where HIM used to score at least some points with their barely catchy ballades and melancholic radio rock there is now just a never-ending orgy of depression left. The most interesting things on Venus Doom are the band's sporadic dives into the Black Sabbath childhood and the occasional flashes of rough doom metal. Apart from that most of the time is spent trying to break thru the heavy matter that is obviously Ville Valo's miserable and hopelessly egocentric life.
